MUMBAI: For long, Indian students have spent ripe years of their lives preparing for gruelling entrance exams of all shapes and sizes. On an average, an engineering aspirant used to annually sit for close to 15 entrance exams. Not only did they go through the stress of taking so many exam, many we
re even financially stretched as the exam fee for taking a test ranged anywhere between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,500. In fact, for engineering aspirants, the months of April and May were synonymous to a long stretch packed with entrance exams.
On Tuesday,11th Sept2012, the Maharashtra government has decided to accept the scores of the centralised exam along with the marks of physics, chemistry and maths in class XII. The All India Council for Technical Education, the country's apex body that oversees all technical colleges, in its governing council meeting ratified the decision to allow all its colleges accept the scores of the single test for admission to engineering programmes.
But from the coming academic year, 134 entrance tests will converge into one. India will have just one Joint Entrance Exam for admission to an engineering college, whether in Agartala or Azamghar, in Salem or Srinagar. Class XII scores will matter more than ever.
The HRD ministry's single entrance examination from 2013 for admission to all centrally-funded institutions, such as IITs, National Institutes of Technology, IISER, IIIT, IISc (Bangalore), IIEST (Shibpur) and NERIST (Itanagar). States' engineering colleges can also admit students based on this exam's scores.
